    • "We are proud to announce that on July 7th, 2009 Fat Wreck Chords will be releasing "The Original Cowboy". These predominantly never-before-heard demos were recorded at Goldentone Studio in Gainesville, FL with Rob McGregor on July 15th, 2003. The session was scheduled just prior to our trip to Memphis’ Ardent Studios where As The Eternal Cowboy was recorded (our second full length, and our first release with Fat).
      Having already recorded our first full length album and two previous EPs with Rob at Goldentone, we wanted to do something different for our second full length. We specifically wanted to make an all analog recording which we could do at Ardent. With Rob McGregor coming along to produce, we wanted to make sure he was familiar with the songs, so we made this demo recording.
      At the insistence of Fat Mike, the song “Cavalier Eternal” from the 7/15/03 session did end up making it onto As The Eternal Cowboy, Mike preferring the demo to the version made at Ardent.
      Recorded and mixed in only a couple of hours, The Original Cowboy was only meant to be a trial run, but, listening to it today, there’s a part of me that feels foolish for ever recording these songs a second time. -Tom"

    • KICKBACK SIGNS TO GSR MUSIC

      Some bands are famous, others are infamous and Kickback from Paris, the latest signing to the GSR roster, are most definitely the latter.

      With a history that is rife with controversy, violence and hatred along with a middle finger and fuck you attitude to the hardcore scene that spawned them, Kickback return with their first album in almost 10 years titled No Surrender. As one of the first bands to fuse metal and hardcore, Kickback continue where they left off and all 11 songs on No Surrender are fuelled by the hate that drives them. Stephen's vocals are as raw and pissed off as they ever were, spitting venom and rage with every twisted line of contempt. The music is a barrage of metallic riffing and thunderous drumming that lurches with groove forcing you to bang your head. With a history that spans almost 20 years and with thousands of records sold worldwide this is a much anticipated release for many people and is a continuation of the band's already powerful and destructive legacy. Kickback are very much back on the map and will be a force to be reckoned with in 2009 when thoughts and ideas have become weak and watered down and an attitude of following the leader with a sheep like mentality has become the norm, Kickback are here to tip the scales and upset the balance. No Surrender is just that and more and with a standpoint of Forever War, let the controversy continue.

    • GET ROWDY FEST - Tag 2

    • Am zweiten Tag sprach Gott: "Es sammle sich das Wasser unterhalb des Himmels an einem Ort, damit das Trockene erscheine". Und so ward es. Das GET ROWDY FEST bleibt am zweiten Tag von Regenkatastrophen verschont, allerdings ebenso von heftigen Besucherströmen, derer man sich hätte nicht erwehren wollen. Stände und Essensauswahl sind am zweiten Tag übersichtlich, man könnte es auch so nennen: haben sich dem Zulauf angepasst. WITHIN WALLS, COBRETTI und LOST BOYS sagten im Vorfeld ab.

      NO VALUES springen dafür ein. Die Dresdner Boys and Girl erfrischen mit kompromisslosem Ufta-Ufta, gewürzt mit einem gut gefüllten Kübel Crustpunk. Nur unwesentlich länger als man braucht die Liedtitel "Dump", "Click" und "Dawn" auszusprechen, sind auch die Songs gehalten. Ehe NO VALUES anfangen, sind sie auch schon wieder vorbei. Eine kurzweilige Eröffnung, die kompakter kaum gehalten sein kann.

      Ebenfalls kurzweilig, aber stark verstimmt sind die Gitarren von OUT ON A LIMB aus Chemnitz. Die Tonalität will nicht einheitlich werden und so versucht sich der Sänger als Wanderer zwischen den Welten, wo er auch verloren geht. Seine Idee, sich den Gesang lauter zu wünschen, ist nicht ein rettender FINAL EXIT, sondern macht die ungewollte Dreistimmigkeit nurmehr deutlicher. Schade, denn OUT ON A LIMB und IDLE HANDS haben, im Verbund, durchaus das Potenzial eine PARTYGARAGE in Gang zu bringen.

      Doch "Meingott, jetzt tanzt doch mal!" hätten IDLE HANDS nicht sagen müssen. Der Funke wäre nach den ersten Songs der Münsteraner schon von selbst übergesprungen. Für Ramonesfans und Freunde des 70er Jahre Punks sind IDLE HANDS , wie mir bestätigt wird, ein lohnendes Erlebnis. Die Festgäste entdecken nun auch wieder ihre bislang versteiften Tanzgebeine. Wobei ich mich selbst gerne eines Urteils zur Musik enthalten möchte, da mir der Bogen um diese Musik herum nie groß genug sein konnte.

      Es folgen PROGRESS. Die "arbeidersband" aus Holland beschreibt sich selbst als beeinflusst von STRIKE ANYWHERE, BAD RELIGION und RISE AGAINST. Zu überhören ist das nicht und die Interpretation gelingt ihnen auch im positiven Sinne. Die Politpunker denken daran, auf eine nahende Gegen-Nazi-Demonstration aufmerksam zu machen und verzichten auf die genreübliche, reflektionsarme Bashing-Tradition, die SMASH THE STATUES am Vortag weniger geschickt umschiffen konnten.

      Die Headliner AYS sollten der Veranstaltung letzte Vorstellung sein, sind sozusagen der erlesene Käse am Ende eines zweitägigen Menüs. Aber wie es so oft mit dem Käse ist, selbst der Feinste will nicht recht schmecken, wenn der Magen schon voll ist. Der größere Teil des Publikums ist schon gegangen oder nicht mehr willens noch etwas aufzunehmen. Mir fällt es auch schwer. Aber immerhin ist AYS ein Vorgeschmack auf das FLUFF FEST, auf dem die Jungs im Juli dieses Jahres auftreten werden.

      Abschließend läßt sich sagen, das GET ROWDY FEST feierte einen gelungenen Einstand, wenn auch die Absagen von WITHIN WALLS, COBRETTI, LOST BOYS, MASSHYSTERI und das Fernbleiben vieler Besucher nicht ganz aufgefangen werden konnten. Ich bin Fan.

    • In München sagt man gerne "Festival" oder "Fest". Wenn mehr als zwei Bands in einem Hinterhof auftreten, ist das bereits ein "kleines Festival". Ist es nur eine Band, ist das immerhin noch ein "Fest" und stehen mehr als 4 Leute in einer Bierschlange an, lässt sich in der Rückschau schon von einem "gehörigen Fest" sprechen, das unbedingt wiederholt werden sollte.

      Doch diesen "Festen" fehlt zumeist genau das, was sie ausmacht. Pavillons, Stände, der Geruch von gegrillten Soja-Steaks, diese neongelben Armbändchen, spontane Regenschauer, eine chaotisierende Orgagruppe, die sich beim einsetzenden Sturm an den Zelten festkrallt und ein ca. 50-köpfiges Bandaufgebot. Auf dem GET ROWDY FEST fehlt es an all diesem nicht, wenn sich der Rahmen auch privat anfühlt. Ein Konglomerat aus Veranstaltern hat dazu eingeladen, zuvörderst die PARTYGARAGE und FINAL EXIT RECORDS, sowie TAKEN BY SURPRISE RECORDS.

      Den ersten Tag eröffnen SMASH THE STATUES, eine vierteilige Formation aus Holland. Ganz in der Traditon von NOFX oder PROPAGANDHI, ebenso melodisch und abwechslungsreich, stimmen die Anti-Imps auf den Abend ein. Der Song PENCILS AND INC hebt inhaltlich auf der KEIN MENSCH IST ILLEGAL Kampagne ab und trifft genau die richtigen Worte. Leider sind nicht alle Texte derart feinsinnig. SMASH THE STATUES bleiben oft im Amerika- und Israelbashing stecken. Der Song BAYT LAHIYA schiesst insbesondere wild ins Kraut. Kein Zufall also, dass bei vergangenen Touren ein € pro Merchartikel von SMASH THE STATUES an die Organisation ANARCHISTS AGAINST THE WALL floss.

      Es folgen DRIVING THE SALT aus dem Bayerischen Wald. Der Leser beachte bitte die Möglichkeit dies aufeinander zu reimen, spricht man in bayerischer Mundart. Die nahbaren melody-old-school Dudes suchen momentan ein Label für Ihre neue Platte: "gmischt und gmastert is scho". Das sollte sich finden lassen. Die neuen Songs sind perfekt arrangiert und dem Gesang wurde viel Platz eingeräumt. Dieser sitzt sprichwörtlich "gut auf dem Brett".

      Als drittes spielen HIGH SOCIETY aus Nürnberg, bzw. sagen an. Die Ansagen des Sängers waren schon auf dem TRAGEDY Konzert vor ein paar Wochen legendär, sind sie doch eine Aneinanderreihung von Punker Klischees, die sich gleichsam gegen Klischees richten wollen, eine Identitätsbildung, die sich identitätskritisch zu zeigen versucht, sowie ein erhobener Zeigefinger, der alle erhobenen Zeigefinger zu brechen verspricht. Die Jonny-Rotten-Bewegungs-Lehre hat beim Sänger wohl bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen und steht ebenso im krassen Widerspruch zur gepredigten Zwanglosigkeit. HIGH SOCIETY machen allerdings ganz hervorragenden Punk im Stile der 80er und frühen 90er Jahre, ohne die, in dieser Zeit doch weit verbreitete, textliche Dumpfheit. HIGHT SOCIETY gehören mit Sicherheit zu den aktuell besten Punkbands aus dem süddeutschen Raum.

      Vor RUSH'N ATTACK, benannt nach dem Arcade Game Klassiker, muss man keine Angst haben. Das mächtige Geschütz dieser bärtigen Holländer ist der Rock'n Roll! (Haha, ich liebe es Reviews zu schreiben. Wann sonst darf man ungestraft solche verkackten Phrasen dichten?) RUSH'N ATTACK habe ich vor allem fast ganz verpasst. Sehr schade, denn als ich zum letzten Song den Raum betrete, hatte dieser sich in etwas verwandelt, was mit PARTYGARAGE wohl am besten zu beschreiben ist: Rock, Trash, Schweiss, Lärm und Kutten. Das nächste Mal, wenn es RUSH'N ATTACK heisst, trete ich, ganz klar, pünklich zum Appell an.

      Abschliessend führt das Paket WASTED TIME und GOVERNMENT WARNING, ihres Zeichens Hardcore-Punker aus den USA, den Besucherkreis - maximal pissed(!) - zu den Ursprüngen des Hardcores zurück. WASTED TIME ist in einer Kategorie mit POISON IDEA zu verorten, wenn auch solche Vergleiche stets etwas bucklig daherkommen. Spätestens zu GOVERNMENT WARNING hat dann jeder schon mal irgendwie "getanzt" und der bislang in eine Mülltüte eingehüllte Punk verliert seine Tracht schlussendlich nach einer kollektiven und spektakulären Zerreißprobe. Einziger Wermutstropfen: GOVERNMENT WARNING covert den DESCENDENTS Song "I'm not a loser" mit den wenig geistreichen Textstellen "You fucking homos" und "Go away you fucking gay".

    • "We're calling it a day, boys & girls - Once the Fall rolls around, we can't really do this band the way we would prefer to anymore. Knowing this deadline of ours and having a whole world tour already booked, we'd like to take advantage of the chance to say goodbye to all the people we have met around the world over the years.

      So, please come check us out in the remaining months on our little trip around the globe. So far Asia has been a wonderful experience and we're very happy to have had the chance to meet so many kind people and look forward to the rest of Asia.

      We will be playing our last show on this year's National Edge Day on October 17th 2009 with a bunch of our friends bands and a sweet guest. It will be somewhere T accessible in the Boston area. It will also be a benefit for a women's shelter in New Bedford, MA, run by my kind mother.

      It's been a nice 7 years and we'd like to thank all the unique hardcore kids and bands we have encountered. And in the words of DFJ, thanks to all the shit talkers for all the material to get off on. But, really....we have met so many wonderful people who we'll just never forget.

      It's been so great. Take care and hope to see you over the next couple months.

      ein paar von Euch hab ichs ja eh schon erzählt aber hier nochmal ein "offizielles" Statement:

      Mir wurde beim TRAGEDY Konzert in München am 28.4. eine komplette Protected Pappbox mit über 100 7"s vom Distrotisch geklaut! Der Vorfall muss weit nach Konzertende von Statten gegangen sein. Es hielten sich bis spät in die Nacht weit angereiste Konzertbesucher im Kafe Kult auf. Falls irgendwer von Euch was gehört hat, Singles angeboten gekriegt hat, eine Pappbox mit TAKEN BY SURPRISE Sticker auf nem Konzert sieht, etc. BITTE meldet Euch bei mir unter info@takenbysurprise.net!
      In der Kiste befanden sich ein paar Singles die eher selten bzw. nur bei mir zu haben sind (grüne OBSERVERS 7", MARKED MEN / BIRTHDAY SUITS split, ROB'S HOUSE comp. 7" + DVD, etc.) falls Euch da was unterkommt bei eBay in Tauschlisten, wasweißich bitte auch Bescheid geben.

      Falls die Person, die die Box geklaut das liest, ich habe zwar gut Lust Dir eine auf die Schnauze zu haun, will aber in erster Linie meine Singles wieder, da damit ein Großteil meines kleinen Mailorders auf einen Schlag flöten gegangen ist, also falls Du noch einen Funken Gehirn und Anstand hast schick Sie mir bitte wieder.

      28 years after the band Minor Threat released the song ‘Straight Edge’, the counterculture known as Straight Edge has become a worldwide phenomenon that unites individuals rejecting all forms of intoxication.
      The most widely associated perception of Straight Edge involves abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and promiscuous sex. Since it’s origin in the early 1980’s these beliefs have spread all over the world, connected through the Punk and Hardcore music scenes.
      Through interviews with musicians that directly shaped the idea of Straight Edge from its inception until today, EDGE - perspectives on drug free culture reveals that the abstinence from drugs was established as a youth counter culture rejecting a society dominated by substance abuse and hegemony. Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi), Ray Cappo (Youth of Today, Shelter) and Karl Buechner (Earth Crisis, Freya) give witness to their perception of the history of Straight Edge, why it was so important to them and what it changed in their personal and professional careers. But they also address problems like violence, sexism and intolerance that emerged within Straight Edge, and how it changed the ’scene’ as well as its public image.
      Furthermore, EDGE explores the lives of 10 individuals, that identify as Straight Edge. Their reasons range from negative experiences with drugs to maintaining a healthy lifestyle to political reasons. Through a very close and personal look into their daily lives, we see how their decision to live ‘poison free’ has changed the world for them.
      But how do people discover Straight Edge? How do women experience Straight Edge subculture? What social backgrounds are shared by people new to the scene and what makes someone turn Straight Edge? How does mainstream culture perceive this movement?

      Seminal punk band Rancid - Tim Armstrong (guitar/vocals), Lars Frederiksen (guitar/vocals), Matt Freeman (bass/vocals), and Branden Steineckert (drums) - have set June 2nd for the release of Let The Dominoes Fall (Hellcat/Epitaph), their first studio album in six years. The platinum-selling band recorded at George Lucas' Skywalker Sound Studio, with production by Epitaph Records founder/Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Let The Dominoes Fall features nineteen new songs, all written by Rancid. Special guest and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Booker T contributes Hammond B3 organ on one track, "Up To No Good."
